    Phone: +441603593375
    Personal Website: http://www.uea.ac.uk/international-development/People/Academic/mcguire

Research Activities: I focus on the interface between local genetic resource managers and formal research institutions, particularly around crop breeding and seed supply. Key areas here include studying farmer knowledge and practice in plant genetic resource management, the social norms and local institutions that shape access, and how policy narratives and institutions affect reforms in R&D. This has been applied to development interventions such as participatory plant breeding (PPB) and humanitarian actions, e.g. emergency seed relief.

    Recent work includes

    1. developing Seed System Security Assessments, along with Louise Sperling, to help aid and development practitioners better understand informal seed systems, and
    2. analysing networks of seed exchange across countries, using network analysis and ethnographic tools, and 3) exploring barriers to ‘capacity development’ in molecular plant breeding in Southern NARIs.

    Position: Research scientist
Work Address: UMR 5175 – CEFE 1919 route de Mende 34293 Montpellier Cedex5
    Personal Website: English and French
Research Activities: My research concerns two subjects: the interactions between societies and their environment, and the local management of agrobiodiversity. I am analysing how both components of the concept of Biodiversity – the cultural and biological diversity – interact, and how they modify the adaptation potential of societies that have to deal with quicker and more global changes. In my past research, I hypothesised that the social organisation found in a village could inform the biological structuration of plants (from landscape to gene level).

    Personal Website:
    https://sites.google.com/site/plantbiodiversityadaptation/home
Research Activities: My research focus lies in the field of plant evolutionary genetics. I am interested in the role of evolutionary processes in shaping the genetic diversity of cultivated plants and their wild relatives. Crop diversity is the result of the interactions among humans, plants, and their environments. My research relies thus on a multidisciplinary approach including population genetics, anthropology and ecology.

I am currently working on the evolutionary history of an African cereal, fonio millet (Digitaria sp.). Fonio millet is an underutilized crop with high potential to increase food security and to generate incomes particularly in marginal lands.
