    Position: Research Horticulturist

Work Address: USDA, ARS, Appalachian Fruit Research Station, 2217 Wiltshire Road, Kearneysville, WV 25430

    Phone: 1-304-725-3451 Ext. 353

Research Activities: The goal of my work is the development of new pear scions with improved fruit quality, productivity, disease and insect resistance, and new rootstock cultivars which induce early and sustained yields and control tree vigor. I use Pyrus germplasm from Europe and China in my breeding and research programs. Research focuses on the genetic control of important traits, and modes and mechanisms of host resistance to fire blight and pear psylla. I am a former chair and current member of the Pyrus Crop Germplasm Committee, a committee which advises the US National Plant Germplasm System and the National Clonal Germplasm Repository collection of Pyrus, Cydonia and related rootstock genera.

    Personal Website: http://uk.linkedin.com/pub/davy-mccracken/14/461/98a

Research Activities: Dr Davy McCracken is a Reader in Agricultural Ecology and Team Leader of the Resource Economics and Biodiversity team at SAC. Davy’s research focuses on the relationships between European farming systems and wildlife ecology.

Davy joined SAC in 1995 and since then he has managed a variety of projects looking at the relationships between farm management practices, vegetation composition and structure and invertebrates of importance in the diet of farmland birds.

Davy works closely with the European Forum on Nature Conservation and Pastoralism (EFNCP), helping them to plan, organise and publish the outputs from various seminars and conferences held across Europe. Through his links with EFNCP, Davy has been involved in the development of the High Nature Value (HNV) farming systems concept and highlighting the impacts of policy on HNV systems has been the focus of much of his work at European level.
