Research Activities: Scientist focusing his research on the study of agricultural biodiversity, (genetic resources among cultivated plants in traditional society) and individual strategies which contribute to the collective conservation of biodiversity. Development of a monitoring and evaluation system for economic and environmental impact in the context of diverse agroecosystems and prospective modelling. Using modelisation (GIS, Role Playing Game and Multi-agents Systems) to increase the confrontation of many points of views and develop new forms of gestion, collective action and coordination of actors to conserve genetic resources in agriculture. Key words research: Genetic resources exchanges, norms and regulations, • Individual and collective strategies, Participatory research, Seed system modelling, Farming system characterization, Biodiversity valorization.

    Position: Population Geneticist

Work Address: 1111 South Mason Street, Fort Collins, CO 80525

    Personal Website: http://www.ars.usda.gov/pandp/people/people.htm?personid=42033

Research Activities: At the NCGRP, Dr Richards’ research focuses on the population genetics of genebanking. His work develops methods that help locate and sample genetic diversity from the wild and monitor its integrity after it is brought in to the collection. Of particular interest to are the diversity of crop wild relatives and the history of their domestication. Often methods that are used to explore these processes span the boundary between phylogenetics and ecological/ population genetics.

    Paolo Barberi

Position: Professor in Agronomy and Field Crops

Work Address: Institute of Life Sciences, Piazza Martiri della Libertà 33

Research Activities: – Alternative (low-input and organic) cropping systems: effects on crop production, soil fertility, gross margin, energy efficiency, environmental impact.
    - Optimization of cropping systems through an agro-ecological approach (genetic, specific and habitat diversity).
    - Organic farming: integrated management of nutrient and weeds (via green manure crops). Non-chemical weed management (preventive, cultural and direct – mechanical and thermal – weed control). Identification of wheat cultivars with higher competitive ability against weeds.
    - Interdisciplinary studies on functional biodiversity in agro-ecosystems: functional values of wild vegetation, interactions between wild vegetation, insect populations (pests and beneficials) and agro-ecosystem structure (planned biodiversity, field margin complex) in integrated and organic farming across different spatial and temporal scales. Interactions between crop, wild vegetation and mycorrhizae.
    - Development of indicators of sustainability for agro-ecosystems assessment in organic farming.
    - Weed ecology: comparison of weed vegetation (population and community) dynamics in conventional, low-input and organic cropping systems and in different crop management systems (soil tillage, N fertilization, cover crops).

Position: Program Leader, Agrobiodiversity and Ecosystem Services

Work Address: Parc Scientifique Agropolis II, 34397 Montpellier Cedex 5, France

Research Activities: I conduct research on how biodiversity can be conserved in agricultural landscapes and what the functional contribution of that conserved biodiversity is to the provision of ecosystem services, both on-farm, and common pool resources.

My work spans the theoretical relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem services, and the applied, working mostly with agricultural landscapes of Mesoamerica and Africa.

I am also interested in the relationship between agrobiodiversity and human nutrition.
