Agriculture and Rural Development Day at COP 15

December 4th, 2009

The Platform for Agrobiodiversity will take part in Agriculture and Rural Development Day to be held on 12 December at the Faculty of Life Sciences (LIFE), University of Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark coinciding with the United Nations Climate Negotiations (UNFCCC COP-15).

On behalf of the Platform, Dr. Toby Hodgkin will present on Climate Change and Agrobiodiversity: Strengthening adaptability and resilience facilitating adaptation and transition. Agrobiodiversity already proves important in helping rural communities and farmers throughout the world adapt to climate change. Diversity (genetic, species and ecosystem) in production systems can improve adaptability and resilience and is an essential part of adaptation to changing production conditions.

Over the past 18 months the Platform for Agrobiodiversity Research has compiled information on the experiences of indigenous peoples and rural communities who are using agrobiodiversity to help adjust to changing conditions and provide improved livelihood strategies.  Ensuring that rural communities and farmers around the world can meet emerging challenges requires new knowledge and new partnerships that embed agrobiodiversity maintenance and use in climate change response strategies.
