Millions Fed: Proven Successes in Agricultural Development

November 11th, 2009

Learning from successes in agricultural development is now more urgent than ever. Progress in feeding the world’s billions has slowed. The challenge of meeting future food needs remains enormous and is subject to new uncertainties in the global food and agricultural systems. More challenges are on the way. The world’s population is projected to grow to nine billion by 2050. Climate change is raising risks for farmers. Environmental degradation is contributing to poor soils and scarce water.

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), supported by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, undertook an initiative to identify interventions in agricultural development that have substantially reduced hunger and poverty. The project, Millions Fed: Proven Successes in Agricultural Development, documents evidence about where, when, and why these interventions succeeded and shares lessons to help inform better policy and investment decisions in the future.

A video and Millions Fed booklet (also available in French; soon in Chinese and Spanish)  are now available to share the messages of the Millions Fed success stories. Coming soon through on the IFPRI Millions Fed website are Discussion Papers for each success story featured in the book. Watch the Book Launch event on 12 November 2009 and learn more about the project.
